Uzodimma Honoured With Nelson Mandela Medal, National Peace Award For Governance Feats
The International Human Rights Commission nominated the governor for the 2026 Order of the Pride of Africa and the Nelson Mandela Medal for A Long Walk to Freedom Award, while the Nigeria Peace Summit conferred on him its National Peace and Humanitarian Award.

In separate letters addressed to the Imo State governor, the two organisations commended him for his sustained push for the advancement of human rights, human dignity, sustainable development and the preservation of peace across the country.

The International Human Rights Commission, in a letter signed by its Director General, IHRC Situation Room, Abuja, Eze Fred Chidozie, explained that the nomination followed a rigorous assessment process. The Commission stated that the nomination emerged from a top-level assessment mechanism following a comprehensive evaluation of leadership, governance, and the delivery of public infrastructure and social services in the state.

According to the letter, the nomination has secured full endorsement from the IHRC Department of Foreign Affairs in recognition of the governor's contributions to the welfare and empowerment of the people of Imo State.

The Commission further disclosed that, in keeping with the standards guiding the Nelson Mandela Medal for A Long Walk to Freedom, a five-member team from the organisation will conduct an independent and impartial inspection of projects across various sectors in Imo State. The team, the letter stated, will assess and rate the performance of the governor's administration as part of the verification process ahead of the conferment.

The evaluation is expected to cover key areas of governance, including infrastructure, healthcare, education and other public services delivered under Uzodimma's administration, with the outcome forming part of the basis for the final conferment of the award.

For its part, the Nigeria Peace Summit said its recognition of the governor was informed by his efforts at sustaining peace in Imo State, the South East region and Nigeria at large. In a letter signed by its Convener, Bishop Timothy Cheren, and South East Coordinator, Rev Dr Ebomuche Emmanuel, the group specifically cited the governor's role in the establishment of the Imo State vigilante guard as a defining example of his administration's impact on regional security and peace.

The letter described the honour as a clear example of the impact of the governor's administration in the formation of the Imo State vigilante guard, a security outfit that has been credited with complementing conventional security agencies in tackling insecurity within the state.

Since assuming office, Uzodimma has continued to attract both local and international commendation for his administration's policies across various sectors, including security, infrastructure, healthcare, education and the digital economy. His government has also pursued a number of initiatives targeted at grassroots development and youth empowerment across the three senatorial zones of the state.

The dual recognition comes at a time when the Imo State governor continues to consolidate his profile on both the national and continental stage, with the state government maintaining that the honours reflect growing recognition of the administration's policy direction and its emphasis on peace, security and human development.

Both organisations expressed confidence that the recognition would further encourage the governor's commitment to good governance and the sustenance of peace, not just within Imo State but across the South East and the country as a whole.

Further details regarding the formal conferment ceremonies for both awards are expected to be announced in due course by the respective organisations.
